CUDDALORE: Ever since the 2001 Census, there has been a 25 to 30 per cent rise in the number of huts in Cuddalore district, according to Collector P. Seetharaman.
He told reporters here on Tuesday that as per 2001 statistics, there were 1.95 lakh huts in the district, the second highest in Tamil Nadu, and it might go up to 2.5 lakh huts now. The increase was owing to partition of families or extension of families.
There were instances in which more than one family was staying in the same hut and in such cases, officials were directed to confirm whether they were separate entities having different kitchens.
Mr. Seetharaman said that ever since the enumeration under the Kalaignar Housing Scheme started on March 29, a total of 87,482 huts were inspected and recorded.
A team comprising Village Administrative Officer, Makkal Nala Paniyalargal and panchayat assistants was carrying out the enumeration. Earlier, it started on a sluggish pace with each team covering hardly 18 huts a day. However, after the dictum that no officials should shirk duty by absenteeism, over 28 huts were being covered every day.
Awareness among people about the scheme also helped in quickening the process, increasing the number of huts covered in a single day all over the district from 6,000 to 9,000. Based on documents and resident status (determined by the Elector's Photo Identity Card, ration card and electricity bill), tenement-dwellers were classified into groups such as “eligible, conditionally eligible and ineligible.”
The data compiled would be sent to the government for further action, Mr. Seetharaman said.
