The Cuddalore Mahila Court awarded life sentence to Ramasamy (65) and his wife Sadharam (60), residents of Periya Nesalur in Vriddhachalam block, for having caused the death of their daughter-in-law R. Ezhilmathi (28).The Judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 each.
Their son Ranganathan (33) fell in love with Ezhilmathi, residing in the same place, and with the consent of both the families they got married in 2005 and begot a girl child.
However, in the absence of Ranganathan his parents used to harass Ezhilmathi urging her to bring more jewellery from her maternal home.
In frustration they doused her with kerosene and set her on fire on July 23, 2012. She was shifted to the Jipmer Hospital at Puducherry where she succumbed after a week.
Based on her statement given on the death bed the in-laws were arrested
