CUDDALORE: A screening camp conducted for the physically challenged here on Saturday received overwhelming response.
The camp was conducted to identify beneficiaries under the “Disabled rehabilitation scheme” by relaxing the age norms. Over 300 persons, up to the age of 45, turned up at the camp.
According to District Revenue Officer S. Natarajan, the camp was being held to identify those having 60 per cent disability and above for getting financial assistance from the State government.
Originally, tahsildars were authorised to identify the physically challenged candidates above 45 years. But in the case of those below 45 years, a special committee had been constituted, with the District Collector as chairman, to find out the eligible beneficiaries.
The committee consists of Collector P. Seetharman, Disabled Rehabilitation District Officer Selvaraj, Social Welfare Officer Bhuvaneswari, Special Deputy Collector (Social Service Scheme) Jayakumar and Joint Director (Health services) Jayaveerakumar.
Two orthopaedic surgeons Vijay Anand Thambiah and Sivasubraminam examined the candidates. Persons would be selected on the following criteria: extent of disability, family income, and whether they were having any family support or not. Those selected would be entitled to get a monthly assistance of Rs. 400.
Only those applicants who had already submitted their petitions to the respective tahisldars were called for the camp.
