CUDDALORE: The number of beneficiaries under the Kalaignar Health Insurance Scheme for Life-Saving Treatments is likely to exceed the target, said M.R.K.Panneerselvam, Health Minister.
He was speaking at health camps organised at Kurinjipadi, Vadalur and Kattumannarkoil on Sunday.
Originally, it was proposed to provide the insurance cover under the scheme to one crore families that had annual income of less than Rs 72,000. But, going by the response, it looked as if the number of families that opt for the benefit might touch 1.5 crore, Mr. Panneerselvam said.
The government had paid a premium of Rs. 517 crore to Star Health Insurance for the anticipated one crore families. The Minister noted that till October 30, a total of 8,781 persons underwent surgery under the scheme at a cost of Rs. 30.03 crore and another 7,807 persons were awaiting their turn. Of 78.17 lakh families registered under the scheme so far, 27 lakh families had got the identity cards.
Specialists in urology, neurology, ENT, orthopedic and plastic surgery drawn from the Ramachandra Medical Centre, Madras Medical Meission, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, K.G.Hospital, Aravind Eye Hospital, etc., attended to the visitors at the camps on Sunday.
As regards Cuddalore, 271 persons underwent surgery at a cost of Rs. 1.27 crore and another 247 patients were scheduled for treatment. Of 2,64,916 families that took photographs in the district, 22,198 families had got ID cards.
Vijayakumar, coordinator of the scheme, Collector P.Seetharaman, District Revenue Officer S.Natarajan and medical officers, were present.
